Question: Refusal of treatment is legal in every state; people are allowed to forego medical procedures (or be removed from ventilators and feeding tubes) even if doing so will result in their death. Assuming the patient is competent and the decision is voluntary in all cases, is there a morally significant difference between letting a patient die (withholding treatment), enabling them to die (assisted suicide) and causing their death (euthanasia)? Arguably, euthanasia is the most moral option if someone is physically incapable of ending their own life. We euthanize dogs and cats to prevent them from suffering unnecessary pain on a regular basis; why not humans?
