Assignment Title - Potential Divider

INTRODUCTION - As the name suggests, the potential divider circuit enables us to divide the applied potential. It helps us to sample the applied voltage to keep a track of the circuit. If there be a high voltage circuit, then we cannot simply attach a voltmeter to measure the potential without damaging the measurement device. In such case, we use a potential divider circuit to sample only a portion of the applied voltage and provide it to the voltmeter.

The potential divider circuit consists of simple resistors connected in various combinations, depending on the application. But depending on the configuration we can mathematically calculate how much voltage drop can be achieved across any two points of the circuit. This enables us to predict even before we build the circuit as to what value can be achieved with what kind of arrangement of resistors.

Given in figure 1 (attached), is the simplest arrangement of resistors. There are two resistors connected in series. And since the resistors are connected in series, we know that the current flowing through both the components will be the same. It will be the voltage that will be divided across the resistors.

Now if the output voltage is measured across the resistor R2, then given below is the formula to predict what would be the value of potential across that resistor.

Draw the circuit and determine the Vout from simulation.

EXERCISE - Given a sample potential divider circuit built in OrCAD (in attached file). Now for the given value of resistor R2, calculate the theoretical value of voltage that you would obtain from the formula and compare it with the simulation result. Include screenshots of the output graph to support the data and fill the value in the table (attached).
