Assignment - Social World Essay

Social World Analysis - This assignment has two parts:

Part 1: Social World Description (2-3 pages)

The first part (Social World Description) requires you to provide a detailed description of a group/social world that you are part of/familiar with. The key to writing a compelling description is to imagine that you have to describe your social world to someone who is completely unfamiliar with it.

When you read the sample essay about the social world of smokers ask yourself this question- 'did I get a good idea of what the social world of student smokers is about?

Part 2: Analysis/Interpretation (3-4 pages)

The second part requires you choose and utilize the concepts we have covered in class e.g. gender, subculture, face-work etc., and to analyze your social world with those concepts. You should pick concepts that you think are most relevant/appropriate to your own interests and social world.

When you read the sample essay you will notice that the concepts being used are (mostly) defined when introduced, and also these concepts are used in an analytically meaningful way i.e. the writer is carefully choosing several concepts that are appropriate/relevant for the analysis of his particular social world.

When you have finished reading the sample essay you will notice that you will have gained a good description of the social world of smokers and also a good sociological analysis of certain aspects of that world.

Your essay must include all of the following

i. A title page -develop a creative title for your essay that speaks to the content of the essay - don't just write 'Social World Essay'

ii. An introduction, main body paragraphs and a conclusion.

iii. In the introductory paragraph of part 1 (description)

A clear indication of the social world you will be writing about and your choice of relevant concepts for use in part 2.

iv. In the main body of part 2 (analysis)

The definition and use of at least 2 concepts from course material for analyzing your social world.

Direct citation/quotation from the textbook of every concept definition that you use in the essay (2 minimum).

One indirect citation (paraphrasing) from the textbook (doesn't have to be a concept or theory). You should underline any paraphrased sentences/words to help us identify them in your essay.
