Question: Sexual Education
Lecture You have been asked to teach a group of junior high students about how gender and race/ethnicity influence sexuality and sexual behaviour in relationships. Given what you learned, create a lecture to the class.
Pick TWO (2) of the 6 topics on the list below to address in your lecture. For each topic: (a) indicate your topic with a heading, (b) be specific about what information about gender and race/ethnicity you would tell the students and (c) make it clear why you think this specific information about gender and race/ethnicity is important for students to know.
That is, what do you think the students really need to know about the role that gender and/or race/ethnicity plays in these areas and why? How can this information help them better understand themselves or their own experiences? Race/ethnicity may not always have been explicitly discussed with respect to each topic below, but you should use the "Diversity Matters" and "Spotlight on..." slides to inform your responses.
- Sexual double standard
- Sexual orientation/identity
- Orgasm frequency & sexual satisfaction
- Practicing safe sex
- Friends with benefits relationships
Note that your class of junior high students consists of all genders and sexes and races. Your goal is to educate ALL students about the information that applies not just to themselves but to those of different genders, sexes, and races so they can be well-informed. Response should be around 500-700 wo rds.
The two topics of choice should include (Information- Gender, Race/Ethnicity, importance)
- Information- Gender: Clearly explains how gender plays a role in this area, with accurate information about WHY or HOW there are differences between genders.
- Information - Race/Ethnicity: Clearly explains how race plays a role in this area, with accurate information about WHY or HOW there are differences between "races" (and gender)
- Importance: Clear explanation of why this information is important (i.e., why is knowing this specific information about race/gender important).
