PART
- Fortune cookies contain little "pearls of wisdom" about life and living. For this assignment, you will reflect on what you have learned in your life and in your studies about cuisine and culture, and then create fortune cookie statements, and explanations of those statements, that capture your accumulated wisdom.
- I expect you to create a statement of wisdom, as well as a one paragraph reflection of how this relates to your relationship with food. This is not an easy task at first but if you dig deep you can find gold! You will complete two of these assignments one on week 3 and one on week 5. The first will be focused on your past relationship with food, and the second will focus on your present relationship with food.
- You will submit each "pear of wisdom" along with its elaboration no later than Sunday night of the week when it is due.
Assignment Overview
Fortune cookies contain little "pearls of wisdom" about life and living. For this assignment, you will reflect on what you have learned in your life and in your studies about cuisine and culture, and then create a fortune cookie statement, and explanations of those statements, that capture your accumulated wisdom.
Here are some Reflection Questions to help you come up with your wisdoms. Please do not just submit a list of answers to these questions. They are guidelines.
Fortune Cookie Post #2: Wisdom from the Present. Due week five
- What have you learned in your studies so far about food that really impacted you?
- Have you had any significant "aha!" moments during your studies that are helping you to continue to develop and grow?
- What's the most important lesson you are learning right now in relation to food, culture and yourself?
- What are some areas you would like to develop yourself more in regard to your understanding and involvement with food?
Process:
- Use the guiding questions listed above to help you think and reflect for each post. Then create a simple statement that reflects your wisdom, similar to what you would find in a fortune cookie.
- Next, briefly explain your fortune cookie statement. Answer at least one of the following questions to explain your statement:
- Why is this statement important to me?
- What have I learned from this statement?
- What do I wish to tell other's about my own experience around food and culture?
- How is my wisdom applicable to others?
- You can use writing, photos, illustrations, videos, poems, or audio recordings to explain your statement.
Here are some Examples to get you more comfortable
"Don't rush dinner!"
This statement is a reflection on my past behavior around food. As a young person I had many interests and I did not have a serious relationship with food. I looked at food as something you eat to survive and could not get away from the table fast enough. Now that I have a newer and deeper cultural appreciation of food, I wish I had spent more time with my mom and grandmother at the table, learning from them and writing their recipes and understanding their stories. My wisdom for everyone who is young and still around their parents and grandparents is to take time with them. Absorb their stories and keep them somewhere safe for future generations because it is a shame to lose all of these stories and recipes because we were too busy to pay attention.
"The most important thing at the dinner table are the people sitting around it"
This statement is important to me because it describes one of the most important lessons I have learned about food this year. Being alone and not able to feed others I have come to realize that no fancy ingredients or high end skills are worth anything on their own. This has caused me to understand that I should not get carried away obsessing about my skills and forgetting my human relationships. I now know that I can learn from my family and friends and colleagues and that food is a social experience not a science.
Examples of Fortune Cookie Statements
- Courtesy begins in the home and is learned at the kitchen table.
- Courtesy is contagious when sharing food.
- Curiosity kills boredom when you learn to bake a cake.
- Dedicate yourself with a calm mind to the task at hand when learning to make puff pastry for the first time.
- Depart from the path by trying a new food or recipe.
- Diligence and modesty can raise your social status just like your cake baking.
- Distance yourself from the vain just like genetically modified foods.
- Do not be intimidated by the eloquence of others. Learning to be a baker or cook takes time, experience and learning from others.
- Do not demand someone's soul if you already have their heart and appetite.
- Do not let ambitions overshadow small successes in the kitchen.
