DISCUSSION: Independence or Interdependence? Four questions for thought and discussion!
The contents of this module 4 had a lot to do with how teachers' culture might be different from a child's family culture and this can present challenges to awareness and understanding on both sides. This can lead to conflict. What are your experiences with culture-clash? Answer the following questions and read your fellow-students' posts for mutual understanding. Post comments on three of your fellow students' discussion posts for full points... And, please, don't say "I don't really have a culture". That sounds like "privilege" to me... Really look at yourself...
1) What is your family culture more aligned with: independence (individualistic) or interdependence (collectivistic)?
2) What is something other cultures misunderstand about yours?
3) Think of a conflict you have had with someone (if you already work with children and families, try to describe a time when you and the parents didn't see eye-to-eye). Might the conflict have something to do with culture? How?
4) How has your thinking changed after researching family culture and values? How might you be a better teacher (or counselor or social worker, or friend)?
