Environmental Scanning

Many workforce issues are caused by changes in the market, labor pool, or legislative action. Environmental scanning is a process that systematically surveys and interprets relevant data to identify external opportunities and threats. Strategic staffing and recruitment managers must not only recognize the present state of the environment and their industry but also be able to predict its future positions. When conducting an environmental scan, a variety of methods should be used to collect data. On the basis of your research findings and personal experience, and giving specific attention to strategic HR planning and environmental scanning, consider the rapidly changing work environment; prepare your report by answering the following questions:

• What character traits should employers seek in the employees they hire? How might these be articulated in the job description?
• How important is grade point average (GPA) as a determinant of job success?
• If a prospective employer put significant weight on GPA as a selection factor, would you be a competitive candidate? Why or why not?
• What about the importance of major field of study and extracurricular activities?
• What do a college graduate's GPA, field of study, and extracurricular activities communicate to employers about that person as a prospective employee?
