A local school board hires you as a leadership consultant to help educate them about what to think about and look for in hiring new principals for three unaccredited schools in their economically diverse community. Most students are not performing well on standard achievement measures; even high-achieving students' scores are flat and modest. Over the past 10 years, the board has hired a dozen mature principals who come in with attractive school improvement ideas, tell teachers to put these plans into action, but leave their schools within three years. The constant principal turnover is roiling their schools and the district.

As a leadership consultant, develop a 3 to 5-minute oral presentation with at least one graphic to orient the school board about the changes in how they might understand school leadership for twenty-first century schools, and what to look for in a principal who can actually make a difference. Use insights from at least three of the following-Industrial and Knowledge Era leadership needs, entity and collectivist theories, rationalist and sense making theories, open systems thinking, and PSEL Standards-without being pedantic-to help board members rethink the leadership their schools need.
