"Watch that Attitude"

It will be helpful for you to review Chapter 7 before answering this week's discussion question. One thing we have learned in the previous reading is that people spend most of their time thinking about other people! We care what others think, don't we?

Just some thoughts to consider: Has anyone ever told you to "watch your attitude"? If you are a parent, you have probably said that to one of your children.

How do we form our attitudes in the first place? Chapter 7 of your text discusses these and other questions about our attitudes, beliefs, as well as consistency theories such as cognitive dissonance (241). Share any cognitive errors or biases that you recognize now that you might like to change.

When have you experienced cognitive dissonance?

For your discussion post, answer the following:

After reviewing the material, consider the ways in which your own attitudes and ideas have been formed.

Who and what has influenced the development of your attitudes and beliefs the most?

What religious or cultural beliefs do you hold as important that may differ from others?

In the creation of an attitude or belief have you ever experienced cognitive dissonance? If you feel comfortable sharing what was the process like?

Share any cognitive errors or biases that you recognize now that you might like to change.

*Remember to share at your own comfort level as far as what you choose to disclose. This forum is not to cause you to feel embarrassment or shame, but rather give you cause and opportunity for more insight.

  • Even though you may be sharing from personal experience, remember that there are plenty of ways to include a reference to this week's good research material within your post. Don't forget your citation and reference as you share.

  • For this week's discussion on our attitudes and religious beliefs I think this would be a very interesting topic for all of us to learn more about each other. I believe that my parents were the ones who definitely influenced my attitude the most as well as religious beliefs that I recently grew out of. My mom and dad raised me and my siblings with the religious beliefs of roman catholic, they had strict rules that they never exactly gave an explanation for. My siblings and I were  raised to respect those arounds us and always watch out for those who might not be able to watch out for themselves.  "People's beliefs and attitudes are formed and developed over time through the influence of family, friends, society, and life experiences" (Baumeister & Bushman, 2020).I think this quote is a very accurate quote because when I was growing up I was taught to trust and be respectful to adults but I ended up experiencing abuse from a teacher at a catholic school I attended. After this experience it changed my views on religion as well as people of certain authority. I now believe in being more spiritual and connecting with nature rather than praying to something/ someone who I felt betrayed me in a time of need. As I grow older I still have a caring attitude and respect for those around me but my religious beliefs definitely changed over the years. Everyone we encounter in life can have some sort of influence over our attitudes and beliefs as well, especially if they have views that are different from what we may have been taught and raised to believe. I believe that as we grow and learn from others around us and are exposed to different things we have the choice to believe what we want without feeling pressured to believe in a certain way.

People's beliefs and attitudes are formed and developed over time through the influence of family, friends, society and life experiences. So, by the time people reach adulthood, they can hold very definite opinions about almost anything and resist change, even if the information on which they base them is not credible (Baumeister & Bushman, 2020).

The biggest influence on the development of my attitudes and beliefs is observation. People often learn attitudes by observing people around them. When someone you admire embraces a particular attitude, you are more likely to develop the same beliefs. For example, children spend a lot of time observing their parents' attitudes and often begin to exhibit similar views. So the family atmosphere and parental attitudes have the greatest impact on people because people spend the most time with their parents from birth as well as learn and develop attitudes and beliefs through observation.

I think Eastern culture and Western culture are different in some ways. Different civilizations have different tendencies when it comes to human relationships, resulting in two very different values, collectivism and individualism. For example, Eastern cultures are collectivist, advocating that the individual must adapt to the group in order to maintain social harmony and the collective good (Lim, 2016). Whereas Western culture is individualistic, emphasizing individual freedom, individual interests and individual values. An individual-centered worldview of society and human relationships encourages people to express their inner states or feelings.

Cognitive dissonance describes the incompatibility that occurs when you do something that goes against your long-held beliefs and opinions. I will share an example from my experience. Before college, I always believed that it was important to go to bed by 11 pm and to maintain a good routine because going to bed late was damaging to the body's organs. However, when I went to college, I was not under the control of my parents, so I stayed up late every night. Although every time I stayed up late I was worried about whether it was damaging my health and felt that it was against my long-standing healthy routine. But I always reassure myself that as long as I get 8 hours of sleep there will be no effect on my health.

I used to have a prejudice against some other cultures. For example, for people who belong to GBLT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgendered). Because of the influence of Chinese culture, I think GBLT is contrary to the purpose of "passing the lineage". But now I think I need to change this bias and learn to accept and respect different cultures.
