Behavior Modification Plan Instructions
Self-management (Ch. 20, pgs. 413-428) is a behavior modification procedure people use to influence their own behavior. Antecedent control procedures (Ch. 16, pgs. 327-349) manipulate antecedents to evoke desired behaviors. Behavioral contracts (Ch. 23, pgs. 469-482) are a method used to apply reinforcement and punishment contingencies to help people manage their own behavior.
You will develop a 4-week behavior modification plan of a target behavior you wish to increase or decreases. The goal for this assignment is to establish procedures you would implement to change a target behavior.
Target Behavior
Identify a target behavior you want to increase (e.g., studying) or decrease (e.g., eating junk food). Identify if you wish to increase it or decrease it. Discuss why you chose the specific target behavior. What do you hope to gain from the behavior change?
Define the target behavior you wish to increase or decrease.
What some negative effects you are currently experiencing because of the current behavior you want to modify.
Behavioral Goals
Identify an appropriate level of the target behavior that will reflect improvement in some aspect of your life.
Identify and discuss the level of the target behavior you will meet each week.
Reinforcers and Punishers
Identify a positive or negative reinforcer you will use each week if you meet your weekly goal. Why did you pick select this specific positive or negative reinforcer?
Identify a positive or negative punisher you will use each week if you do not meet your weekly goal.
Self-Monitoring Strategy
It is important to use a method for recording each occurrence (or lack thereof) of the target behavior immediately after it occurs or when it does not occur when it should. Capturing baseline data and data after the behavior modification plan has been implemented is necessary to observe changes in the behavior and also identify that the behavior modification techniques areworking.
You will record baseline data for one week. You will record data of your target behavior after the implementation of the behavior modification plan for three weeks.
Identify the method you will use to capture the data (e.g., data sheet, recording device). Discuss why you selected the specific method.
Discuss how you will use an AB Design (Ch. 3, pg. 52) to graph your data. What will the y-axis label be? What will the x-axis label be? What units of measurement will you identify for the y-axis and x-axis? What phase labels will you use (Ch. 3, pgs. 45-47)?
Antecedent Control
Identify one SD you will use for your target behavior. Why do you think this specific SD or cue will work?
An establishing operation is an environmental event that increases the value of a stimulus as a reinforcer. When an establishing operation is present, the behavior that results is more likely to occur due to that reinforcer. Identify one establishing operation (EO, Ch. 16, pgs. 331-332) you will use in your behavior modification plan. Why did you select this specific EO?
Behavioral Contract (Unilateral)
Contract managers help those engaging in behavior modification meet their goals by utilizing a behavioral contract. Identify someone who will be the contract manager for you behavior modification plan. Why did you select this person?
Discuss components of the behavioral contract as each applies to your target behavior (Ch. 23, pgs. 473-474). This should include(a) identifying the target behavior(s), (b) stating how the target behavior will be measured, (c) stating when the behavior must be performed, (d) identifying the reinforcement and punishment contingencies, and (e) identifying who will implement the contingency. Please refer to pages 473-473 in the textbook for more information related to the components.
Evaluation of Change
After implementation of the self-management strategies, you will continue to collect data for a minimum of three weeks. How will you determine that you have reached your goal(s)? Discuss how you will use your graphed data to determine if you have meet your goal(s).
Maintenance Strategies
Identify and discuss one strategy you will use to ensure you continue with the target behavior (Ch. 20, pg. 427).
