Are anorexia and bulimia caused by our society? What are the motivations or social pressures to be thin? What are the major sources of these pressures? Are there other cultures where this pressure does not exist?

Yes, I believe that a majority of the eating concerns in the world are due to the society and the pressure put on by it. I feel that so much pressure and need for acceptance by being thin and fit. Many people have poor body image of themselves and strive for the acceptance and perfectionism through anorexia and bulimia. Movie stars and celebrities are always dressed to perfection and have the perfect fit body that many people strive for. I also feel that anorexia and bulimia are the easier way to achieve this body image versus eating healthy and working out. Although we do live in a society today where the obesity is at an all high level, I wish people would seek the help they need to understand the importance of nutrition and making the right choices. People feel that they are unable to eat cake or sweets, when in fact this is totally acceptable when consumed within a normal amount.

Many people I feel fall into this disorder without even trying to recognizing it and then it continues to escalate. People are often in denial that there is a problem and refuse to seek help.
