As a hospitality and F&B intern, Haylee did very well and was the supervisor's favourite. One day she was asked to take on additional hours, which she gladly accepted. After that happened a few times, she started noticing that none of the other interns were offered extra hours and that permanent staff did not get a chance to work overtime at all.
Haylee decided to ask around and found out that she got the additional work - and not the permanent and senior F&B staff - because her pay rate as an intern was much lower. Malaysia's labour laws state that an intern's allowance should not exceed RM2,000 a month but with the additional hours, Haylee knew her monthly income would surely touch RM2,500 for those months she was offered the extra hours. Lydia, one of the other interns, a good friend of hers, would surely benefit from the extra cash, Haylee knew so she thought she could ask the supervisor to split the additional work so each would earn an extra RM250.
