Assessment: Poetry Composition: Letter
Correspondence, such as a letter, presents a message addressed to a specific reader or readers. You will use your imagination to compose a letter for this assignment.
Take the role of the speaker in "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," and correspond with your sister by writing her a letter that has a friendly structure. In your letter,
- describe your visit to Tintern Abbey, including your thoughts and feelings;
- adopt a tone and style that reflect your sentiments and the era in which you live; and
- establish an organizational structure that is suited to the context in which you are writing-a friendly letter to a dear family member.
Use Concept Vocabulary. Refer to your Word Network to use new basic vocabulary you have learned. Also, use one or more of these concept vocabulary words in your writing: tranquil, sublime, serene, harmony, bliss, desire.
Take Notes. Review the poem, and take notes on the details of the visit that the speaker would include in a letter to his sister.
Organize for Context. Outline your letter, using an organizational structure that is suited to the context-a personal letter to a beloved sister about a treasured place. For example, you might decide to start your letter with the information that your sister will be most excited to hear. Alternatively, you might suggest the speaker's relationship to Tintern Abbey early on in the letter, in a sentence such as "Little has changed at the Abbey since we were children."
Revise for Structure. Follow the structure of a friendly letter: Provide the date of the writing, a friendly greeting, a body in which you deliver information, a closing, and your signature.
