Assessing the Value of a Wellness Program

A manufacturing company is preparing to implement a company wellness program within its East Coast, Southeastern, and West Coast locations. These locations employ about 1,800 workers in total.

The proposed wellness program would involve five possible components:

  • on-site exercise equipment,
  • smoking cessation program,
  • mindfulness training,
  • free mental health counseling, and
  • financial education.

The company's CEO is supportive of a wellness program. But she also wants to justify the program in terms of its costs and benefits. So, she would like to know which of these proposed components of the program the company should consider undertaking.

Questions

  1. How would you research the possible value of each of these components prior to implementation?
  2. What types of company data would you use to determine if each of these components is needed?
  3. Should you roll out the entire program at once, or should each component be rolled out separately? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of each approach? Consider whether the three company locations might be used differently for the rollout.
  4. Assuming that the program is implemented by the company, what types of data-from objective data to employee attitudes-should the company collect to evaluate whether each component is effective?
  5. Are there any "intangible" outcomes that might be considered in assessing the value of the wellness program?
