Assignment:

California was the birthplace of the Reagan Revolution, yet today it is a state so blue that Republican presidential candidates only come to raise money rather than campaign for votes in a state they know they can't win. Conor Friedersdorf of the Los Angeles Times wonders whether the California GOP can remake itself in order to be competitive, and asks WHY it hasn't done so yet?

It makes no difference to me what your political affiliation is. I'm not trying to make Democrats feel good or Republicans depressed (I'm a registered Independent, myself). The fact is that Clinton won the state by 30 points 6 years ago and that Republicans hold no statewide offices from the Governor all the way down to the Insurance Commissioner.

What is your view? Can the GOP resurrect itself? Do you believe it can? Do you believe it even needs to? Be as objective as possible in assessing the future of the Republican Party in a state that is undergoing so much demographic change.
