Response One
When discussing potential risk factors when it comes to juveniles I believe that there are many. I work as a Juvenile justice worker and many times we deal with family's as well as the kids in the field one potential risk factor that I would say is detrimental to the juveniles growth is family structure as well as social factors. This can affect the child in many ways without family structure the child is more likely to get into trouble when dealing with kids his age and is more likely to fall into the social peer pressure of what the kids counterparts are doing when not at home. The community factors are also important because even when a child does have family structure what goes on in the schools and the neighborhoods effects the child's viewpoints as well and in part this is the reason why some crimes in neighborhood are increased because of the influences when it comes to the juveniles and his peers. When discussing were I live and the risk factors I would have to say that it's more of a social factors many times when listening to these kids talk to one another it because all about fulfilling a need to have materialistic things such as cars and jewelry in part this is what they feel brings value to them as people especially in the black community when dealing with many people of ethnic race and involved in gang activities. Without family structure and someone to guide them on what's really important they buy into the social peer pressures of what they think they need to be considered important. If I had to choose one factor that has the most impact on juveniles I would say social factors I have met with many teens with great family backgrounds, but the social factors were so strong that the family hasn't been able to get through the child.
Response Two
Working in a school setting, I believe some of the best risk factors for determining whether our youth will become violent or nonviolent, as adults, are the social factor and some community factors. In the school we see students who come from family where there is poor parenting skills and/or parents who are antisocial. The students get into more trouble at school and in the community. I have a student who's parent allow her to smoke marijuana at home. She got into trouble at school for fighting and has wrecked multiple car with and without peers in the car and she is not yet 16. She is currently on probation. Her parents have very poor parenting skills, they never follow through with discipline and therefore she never learns and continues to get in trouble. I also think peer relationships whether they are positive or negative have a great impact.
In our community we have found, when a student is involved with peer group that is positive they are less likely to become involve in delinquent behavior. We also know that a positive relationship with at least one teacher will decrease the likelihood that a student dropping out or get into trouble with the law.
