Once you have assessed a client, you will need to decide on the appropriate interventions to take with the client. Over the next few modules, we will be exploring some of the counseling techniques that can be taken with clients. We begin with group counseling and intervention.
There are several different group approaches you can take when working with clients. The group approach you take is largely based on the problem the client is presenting, as well as your assessment of the unique needs of a client.
Let's revisit Maria's case. We already know that Maria has been a victim of domestic violence for three years. During your assessment of Maria, you have discovered she knows very little about the cycle of domestic violence. She has had contact with her boyfriend and he has promised her that he will change. He wants her to return to their home. Maria is conflicted. She describes feeling lonely. She views her choices as very few. Think about how a group might help Maria both in learning about domestic violence, as well as gaining support from others.
Our clients are complicated individuals. We cannot simply approach care in isolation. We must understand as many aspects of their lives so that we can plan appropriate interventions. In this module, we will explore group counseling interventions involved in working with clients. We will explore the unique nature of the group counseling process, as well as the role the counselor plays in intervening with the client.
