Chapter 3: The Defensive Plan

  • Why did American leaders reluctantly agree to an Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942? How did the Allies' plan to invade North Africa affect the Allies' ultimate goal of launching a large cross-channel invasion of western Europe?

Chapter 4: Grand Strategy and the Washington High Command

  • Why was the Americans' decision to maintain ninety divisions during World War II controversial?
  • Explain and analyze the unfolding of the role of the US military, of US industry, and of US strategy up to mid-1944 in both the European and Pacific theaters of combat. How did US power and influence change in relation to the power and influence of the other two main members of the Allied coalition, Great Britain and Russia?
