An experiment is conducted using laboratory rats to assess the risk of cancer associated with a new food preservative. In subject groups that ingest less than 1 mg/kg of the chemical per day it is found that the incidence rate of cancer (# of cancers divided by the population of the group) after 18 months is comparable within uncertainty to the cancer incidence rate of the control group. In the subject group whose members ingest 10 mg/kg of the chemical per day it is observed that out of 60 rats 19 suffer from cancerous lesions after one year. What would you recommend the safe limit for human exposure to this chemical be set to based on the information provided above?
