Assignment 1. Assess the Before-and-After of an Organizational Structure
In this application, you will complete a before-and-after comparison of an organizational structure. The purpose is to determine what changes are made as a result of building a project organization for a medium size project, whether the project organization is constructed around a total projectized organization or a matrix organization.
Focus on the staffing of the project and where the work is accomplished in both organizations. For example, if the project work was accomplished within an organization and without using a project team, how would the work be distributed and what would be the focal point for getting the work done? Did the organization establish a project management office (PMO)? If so, describe the role of the PMO in the organization. If not, would the organization benefit from a PMO and what type of PMO should be established?
Procedure
Identify an organization that reorganized itself to take advantage of a merger, new technology, or something else. The organization can be a company or a department or workgroup within the company.
Use the Internet to find news stories that describe the company before and after their reorganization.
Read the news stories and write a paper that compares the organization before and after it reorganized. For example, based on your understanding of the articles, did the organization transform itself from a functional organization into a weak or strong matrix or something else? What were the advantages and disadvantages of the organizational structure before and after the reorganization?
