Case Study: Lucy is 25 years old and lives at home with her mother, Jenny. Lucy has autism spectrum disorder and as such has depended on her mother for care her entire life. Her mother does not support Lucy being independent and wants her to stay at home as Jenny feels this is where Lucy is 'safe'. Jenny believes that society is not accepting of people with disabilities and therefore thinks that by keeping Lucy at home she can protect her from being susceptible to poor treatment in the community. Due to this, Lucy has limited exposure to the community on her own as her mother or support worker are always with her to prevent 'harm' to Lucy. Lucy attended a Special Developmental School until she was 18, where she enjoyed her art subjects. Lucy spends most of her time doing various hobbies, including making jewellery. Recently, she heard from her aunty that she might be able to sell her products online or at local markets, which really excites her because she has been asking her mother if she can get a job to earn her own money. Lucy's mother has said that no-one would hire her, so she is now disheartened and not confident in her abilities.
