Scenario: Maya is a 23 year old Black woman from rural Louisiana who is 34 weeks pregnant with her first child. She was brought into a clinic after complaints of extreme fatigue, paleness of the skin, and trouble concentrating. After a simple blood test, it was revealed that Maya is suffering from anemia. When asked about her current diet intake she revealed that she frequently eats dirt and starch as is customary in her culture. She explains that her grandmother told her that eating dirt and starch would make her unborn baby healthy.
