Purpose: The purpose of this discussion is for you to demonstrate your understanding of the various aspects of moral development and apply this knowledge to hypothetical ethical dilemmas. 

Please read each of the following three (3) dilemmas and answer the questions at the end. You will be analyzing and discussing all three dilemmas in your original post.

Dilemma #1

John and Mary are taking a class together and are strongly attracted to one another. They want to have sex together, but John is married, although the marriage is having difficulties. Should they sleep together?

Dilemma #2

Dr. Johnson makes decisions about which patients have access to a kidney machine. Patients who do not get access will die. There are far more people who need the machine than can be accommodated, so there is a waiting list for those not yet on it. Dr. Johnson's young daughter is injured in a car accident and has kidney damage. She needs access to the machine to live. Should Dr. Johnson take another patient off the machine to put his daughter on?

Dilemma #3

You are shopping with a friend when you notice that your friend is shoplifting. You look around and notice that the store manager is watching you. What should you do?

Please answer the following questions for EACH dilemma:

  1. How would you assess each situation? Do you have all of the facts about each situation? Does that matter?
  2. Please fully identify and consider all of the choices, options, or arguments for each situation. What are all of the options? Please connect each option or argument according to Kohlberg's stages of moral development.
  3. Make your decision for each of the three dilemmas. After making your decision, please explain why you made the decision that you did for each dilemma.
  4. Does age, gender, or sexual orientation factor into your analysis in deciding what to do for any of the dilemmas? Why or why not?
