Assignment:
Select two of your peers' posts and address the following:
- Do you agree with the posters' main points? Why or why not? Have they overlooked some important aspects of how the Fairness Doctrine could be used?
- Apply the posters' response to the original discussion questions to a hypothetical situation of providing equal time for opposing viewpoints. Are there potential problems that have not been addressed? Would their suggestions create more potential for misinformation to be spread? Why or why not?
Peer 1 response:
I think the Fairness Doctrine should and shouldn't be re-established. Everyone should have the right to freedom of speech, but opinions are broadcast in media today beyond television, newspapers, and magazines. The Fairness Act was enforced on companies that owned a broadcast license. In today's society there is social media people who don't hold broadcast licenses can just about post anything that they wise wether it be true or false. If you haven't noticed an example that is presenting today is the US trying to ban TIKTOK, will TIKTOK get banned, this action would cause a huge uproar with so many followers behind TIKTOK.
Newspapers should fall under the same as broadcast media, again this law was enforced so long ago that time has changed. Newspaper are more online now so I would consider newspaper broadcast media. Just like facebook, tiktok, snapchat, and instagram. People have the freedom of speech and people have the right to defend theirself as well.
Everything should be created equal, in time since should dogs have more time then cats. Some people love cats more then dogs and vs versa. I believe if we broadcasted more things that truly need to be broadcasted in America maybe we could fix are healthcare system. Example why are patients who have been on a medication for years, the government changes insurances plans now people have this new insurance that refuses to pay for a medication because there is a cheaper alternative medication. Even though these people have already tried these alternative medications in the past the insurance company is requiring them to try them again to prove that it doesn't work in order for them to pay for that medication that is more expensive.
Peer 2 response:
I do not believe that the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated. As with today's era in developing technology and social media. Social media broadcasts a wide range of information to everyone, and that allows individuals to express their opinions. Fairness Doctrine should not be applied to printed media (newspapers), for example, as it restricts the First Amendment, which protects the freedom of speech and the press.
