Task - Position Paper (1000 words) Mathematics

This task requires PSTs to produce a position paper on a chosen aspect of mathematics education. This position paper must be written to convince the school council to implement changes to the mathematics curriculum area. This is an essential skill for all teachers. It is suggested that the paper is written as a letter to school council. Possible topics could include
- Problem solving as the basis for all mathematics classes.
- Setting ability class groups in mathematics Removing mathematics from the curriculum and replacing it with thinking skills
- Having single gender mathematics classes
- Using concrete materials in all Year 7-9 classes
- Teaching mathematics and science together (in context) as an integrated unit called "Scaths".
- Removing calculators from Year 7-10 classes

Your position paper must be grounded in research. (At least 2 papers must be cited) The following structure is strongly suggested: Brief Introduction Your position (citing relevant research) that clearly states your point of view. At least 3 arguments that justify why your point of view is the one that should be accepted (again citing relevant research). Consideration of 1 or 2 counterarguments and why they should not be accepted. A conclusion summarising your important arguments and restating your point of view.
