Assignment: The presentation of self in everyday life: Social Media Analysis
Erving Goffman (b. 1922 - d. 1982) wrote his ground-breaking book about the self and society, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959), before the invention of the internet and social media. Are his theories still applicable today? This assignment explores how his concept of ‘dramaturgy' relates to social media.
Description of Task: For this assignment you are required to conduct a short social media analysis.
REFERENCING: Please use the Harvard, in-text referencing system
DETAILS OF TASK:
Using examples, write a short piece that identifies some of the techniques and strategies people use on social media to create ‘frontstage' impressions that others may have of them. (Social media includes YouTube, Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.) Then address the question: can there ever be a true ‘backstage' on social media?
You will need to explain what Goffman meant by ‘frontstage' and ‘backstage'. You should include material from social media to illustrate your argument. Only use publicly available material - do not use private posts. Include a short introduction and conclusion to your piece.
