When looking at Blue, Orange, Red by Mark Rothko, it's hard for me to tell what the subject is. While I can easily see the subject in other pieces, I honestly don't see anything here other than shapes. When looking at Autumn Rhythm by Jackson Pollock, I see the change nature goes through in the fall as plant life dies and goes dormant for the winter. To me, the work of Pollock is clearer with its subject and meaning. When I look at Rothko's work, I have no idea what he is trying to convey.

When looking at Judd's work, I am again unsure of what he is trying to communicate. To me, it looks like a lot of emptiness. Judd makes use of mass in this piece but I am still unsure of what it means. Pollock differs from Judd because Pollocks work is more understandable to me where I am completely lost on the meaning of Judd's work.

When viewing an artwork without representational imagery, storytelling, or explicit personal feeling I find it difficult to understand the subject and meaning. Sometimes I can develop my own idea of what it is but other times I see a piece and have absolutely no clue. Shapes and colors can evoke emotion and interpretation. I see this clearly in Pollock's work.
