When building out a team, a new president will face many challenges. Preconceived ideas of expectations, communication barriers, role confusion and adjusting to the new responsibilities are just a few of these challenges. These are challenges that anyone that is not used to their team will face. Once familiarity sets in and teamwork is built-up, the challenges will seem smaller and smaller.

A high performing work team, according to the Society for Human Resource Management, is one that needs a deep sense of purpose and commitment among members, mutual accountability, a diverse range of expertise and interdependence within team members (Developing and Sustaining High-Performance Work Teams, n.d.). Advice for a new president to build this within his team would be to have open and honest communication and transparency of any issues they face. This will build respect and trust among the cabinet members but also with the president and his relationship with the team. This will make overcoming conflict and decision-making a lot easier when there is a foundation of trust. In addition to communication, there needs to be team mission statements and objectives that are updated regularly and communicated about constantly. This will ensure that everyone is on the same page, regardless of everyone's individual roles. Finally, a new president can be conscious of creating an environment that is accepting of diversity and various perspectives. This starts by getting to know everyone outside of just a professional setting in order to see how people interact and prefer certain things. Creating this environment will aid in the respect and trust while also opening the doors for many ideas and perspectives to generate creativity within the team.

There are certain key areas where the president needs to take care of to create a high performing team.

1. Select team members with high collaborative attitude and who have complementary skills for one another.

2. Before a team starts performing, the president should ensure that each member of the team gets to know each other, so that everyone is aware of each others working style and personality. This will help reduce conflicts in the future.

3. It is also important for the president to clearly articulate the rules and responsibility of every team member. The members designated should have expert knowledge on the domain of responsibility.

4. Finally, as a leader the president should ensure that the team members efforts and work are appreciate and they should celebrate both success and failures alike.
