Thomas Jefferson's bill for religious freedom provided that "...no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever...nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities."
Also read the article, "The Separation of Church and State from the American Revolution to the Early Republic" and "America as a Religious Refuge" Parts 1 and 2 from the Library of Congress.
What did these articles and the history show? What do you now see and understand about early America that connects you with, or makes you aware of, the foundations of our country in a different way?
Our music, dance, books, and customs mostly grow up in the nurturing soil of personal and communal values, ideas, and beliefs. Indeed, different values and worldviews were hard at work in early America.
