You are allowed to earn up to a total of two extra credit points by either participating in two separate psychology experiments, or by writing two separate brief papers. (One can also do one paper and one experiment.) You may not participate in any of the studies performed in the Harris lab (please don't participate in them even for other classes as you will be a biased subject.)

The last day to participate in experiments is March 11, Wednesday. The papers are also due on March 11 at the BEGINNING of class. Once class begins no papers will be accepted. Papers can be handed in earlier in the quarter too, which is encouraged.

The paper assignment consists of a two-page double-spaced reaction piece to an article on emotion. One can choose any article on emotion as long as it was not one that was discussed in class or one that was covered extensively in the readings. Some possible journals to get articles from are Emotion, Emotion and Cognition, Journal of Motivation and Emotion. If you are unsure whether an article is appropriate, check with the professor or TAs during their office hours. The first paragraph of the paper should be a summary of the article (like an abstract, but must be written in your own words). The remaining paragraphs should discuss the strength and weaknesses of the article. Some examples would be to describe and discuss any threats to internal validity, did the authors acknowledge these, was there a manipulation check, discuss issues of external validity, etc. The discussion can have positive as well as negative comments. Your paper should also include some original thoughts - e.g. novel hypotheses on the topic or ideas for future studies that might provide relevant findings. You may find the Kidder and Judd article posted on the class website helpful in writing the paper. Remember everything written must be in your own words and you cannot use a paper that you've written about for any other class. You need to hand in a photocopy of the article along with your paper.
