Some of things this is used for are mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, and psychotic disorders. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or CBT is an empirically supported treatment that focuses on patterns of thinking that are maladaptive and the beliefs that underlie such thinking. One thing that stands out in this type of therapy is that the therapist is active, problem-focused, and goal-directed. CBT is a useful tool along with medication for example depressions working together patients have amazing progress in preventing relapse. With CBT patients are taught how to restructure negative thought patterns and are able to interpret their environment in a better way. Some of the important studies for Cognitive-behavioral therapy has come over the past few years for schizophrenia and received a lot of attention in the United Kingdom. In this treatment, patients are encouraged to identify beliefs and their impact and to engage in experiments to test their beliefs. Treatment focuses on thought patterns that cause distress and also on developing more adaptive, realistic interpretations of events (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2003).
