ARTH 204 Modern Art and the Shock of the New - University of Regina

Topic - WWil and Cold War Culture: Entrenching Abstraction

This blog site will allow us to analyze, comment, and critique the class materials and readings for Modern Art and the "Shock of the New."

The goal of this assignment is to create dialogue and critical discussion around each week's topic through communication with your peers. You have the opportunity to get feedback from your colleagues and to create a discussion around the week's topic. When you blog on a topic, you are interpreting the subject and sharing your perspective with your readers. YOU are the expert of your own blog post!

Students should write between 200 to 300 words per post. Begin with a summary of the content you will be discussing, be it a video, online exhibition, a single artwork, a podcast, or an artist. Blog posts general take a position: so don't be afraid to critique an artwork, an idea, or a political position that informs the work in discussion!

Each student is expected to post at least TWO entries on the blog, relating to two different weeks' content. Please sign up for your chosen weeks in the CHOICES activity. As well, students are expected to comment on each other's blog posts, at least twice, fostering a feedback loop around the week's topic. Commentators will be given participation points for their entries on an outstanding/satisfactory/unsatisfactory evaluation model.

Please include quotes from the texts, images and links (with proper citation) that you feel help to address your point of view and inform the discussion. You should include the original content under discussion (for example, a Citation to the podcast Art Curious) but feel free to introduce other content. But beware: if you introduce new content, make sure you are explaining why it is relevant in some depth! Never assume your reader will understand without fully explaining.

If you have signed up for a blog post slot for Week 6 (for example), please have your post completed by the day before so that everyone has a chance to read it before class.

Commentators can read and comment on the post at any time but ideally before class starts so that it is fresh in people's minds.
Some criteria I will be using to access your blog posts:

Content:
• Does your post summarize and inform the reader about the week's topic?
• Does it give a good summary of the course materials?
• Does it demonstrate critical thinking and analysis?
• Does it use examples of artworks and quotes from the course materials to enrich the claims?
• Does it delve into the topic or only skim the surface?

Style/Structure:
• Is there a useful title to tell us about the topic?
• Is the writing clear, concise, and well expressed?
• Does it avoid repetition and errors of spelling and grammar?
• Is the tone of the post engaging and express an interesting perspective?
• Are headings, pictures, and links used to separate and structure the writing?
• Are sentences and paragraphs short and engaging or long and rambling?
• Does the post meet the required word count?
