Question

One long term service and support that is widely used by older adults in need of around the clock care is the nursing home. A nursing home is a residential facility that provides around the clock medical care and help with activities of daily living. Individuals that live in nursing homes tend to require more assistance than what can be provided in a home or in an assisted living facility. The level of care provided in a nursing home is what makes it different from an assisted living and a skilled nursing facility. When compared to a skilled nursing facility, the medical care provided in a nursing home is not as complex as the medical care provided in a skilled nursing facility. Nursing home facilities provide a combination of medical care and assistance with ADLs, mainly focusing on custodial care and ensuring that the residents everyday needs are met and that they are safe and comfortable. Nursing home care is not covered by Medicare. Typically, individuals in need of nursing home care will have to pay out of pocket or use long term care insurance if they have it, or those that are eligible will rely on Medicaid to pay.
