Assignment - Argumentative Paper
Write a 5 page argumentative paper on the book Virgil Aeneid translated by Stanley Lombarado; Hackett. Thesis needs to be in intro. And answer the following questions:
Essay of argument on The Aeneid -
Did Aeneas wrong Dido and does Virgil appear to blame Aeneas or not? Establish your thesis at the beginning of your essay and then to support your thesis, consider the following:
(1) What actually happened (including the involvement of goddesses) and in what respect did this constitute a bond between the lovers? (Was it a legal bond or something else?)
(2) What were the conflicting claims of love and duty as they appeared to Aeneas?
(3) Could Aeneas have done something differently? (Don't just speculate about this. What does the poet narrator say or imply about this?)
(4) What is the poet's implied attitude towards Dido and passionate expression of emotion (love, anger) in general? Why does he speak (in IV.172) of Dido's "shame" (culpa or "fault")?
Please note: in-text quotations from The Aeneid are followed by parenthetical references indicating the book number and line numbers, like this: (IV.165 - 173). Make sure to address the best argument that counters your own. This essay requires close engagement with the text, constructing a credible argument, anticipating and answering a counter-argument, and synthesizing relevant instructional material.
Organization -
1. In the essays that you write, make sure that the first paragraph of the essay contains a precise, delimited thesis statement, which can reasonably be proven in a short paper. The thesis is not an announcement about your topic but a reasonable assertion of interpretation that can be supported by logical argument and evidence from the text.
2. Each paragraph should develop a single main idea.
3. The topic sentence of each paragraph should relate in a clear and obvious way to the previous paragraph and to the thesis statement.
Format - Papers should hate informative and inviting titles. The body of the paper should be double spaced, with one-inch margins on both sides as well as top and bottom. Use a standard academic font size such as Times New Roman. The first line of each paragraph should be indented. Use the in-text citation method and consult the style manual for instructions on long block quotations as well as other formatting instructions. At the end of the paper, include a Work Cited list (a bibliography), following standard MLA bibliographic format Even if you only consulted the primary text, indicate that in the Work Cited list. Make sure NOT to place the translator's name in place of the author. The translator's name follows the title.
