Assignment Full task outline and instructions -

The major assignment task for HUSO-2036 is a 2500 word paper which builds on both your learning from the course content and the skills you have developed in the minor assignments for the course. It is designed to give you a chance to explore a topic you are interested in with some depth, as well as to consolidate and apply your learning from the course. The aim of the assignment task is for students to develop a well researched and substantiated argument, or position, around a topic area related to global development.

In order to both focus the scope of your task and provide you with opportunities to pick what you are interested in, you are provided with a list of 'domains' of social, material, or cultural life, and a list of 'themes' which are all frameworks for thinking, or action discussed in the course. The task requires you to go through these lists (attached below) and pick one of each.

Together the domain and 'theme' you choose will make up your topic area for the task. You are then required to find a development oriented case study on this topic, and explore it for tensions and issues to help you develop an overall argument. This argument or position can be written in one of three genres, a research essay, a manifesto, or a letter to a person/group in a position of power, trying to persuade them of something. All three require similar research, the use of the case study, and engagement with the course as a whole.

These three writing types all have various ways to approach them and usually you would have to research these and work on a structure for your paper. However in this paper you are provided with a strict structure based on developing the skills and knowledge we have been building in this course (outlined below). This structure requires you to engage with literature on your topic, the case study, as well as with the course. It also specifies word counts for each section and suggests the order that you write them in. And, it specifies a minimum number of references for each section.

It is required that you follow this structure (full details on the steps to complete the task and it's structure are included below). The structure is designed to;

a) Help you build your writing and argumentation skills (it will for example help you understand how to fully substantiate a position, such as how to use full paragraphs to step out an argument/position);

b) Provide some boundaries to your research and reading so you don't get lost deciding what to do!;

c) Make certain that the task gives you the opportunity to consolidate and demonstrate (show) your learning over the whole course, as well as do research into a topic that interests you.

Within this required structure the differences between the types of paper are predominantly around the ways that you construct and direct your argument (full details on this are below in the section 'genres of writing' and in the 'steps to complete this task' section).

Assignment Structure - The following structure should be followed exactly, this is part of the assignment requirement.

  • Introduction

2. Do some initial research and reading on the task and decide on your domain and theme focus (together these form your 'topic').

&
