1. Read the paper through once carefully, just to get a feel of it. Does it meet the basic requirements of the assignment? (is it persuasive? Does it use at least two essays from our textbook?)
2. Underline the thesis statement. In your own words, describe in one sentence the writer's PURPOSE.
3. They must use at least two direct quotes: do they? Do they explain what each quote means and connect it to the essay as a whole?
4. They must also cite sources at least two other times. Do they do this well? Explain.
5. Check the MLA citations. Are they accurate? Effective?
6. Read through and mark grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. You need not correct them: just make the writer aware of where they are.
7. Mark the strongest part of the paper, and explain.
8. Suggest what portions the author might consider cutting. Mark the weakest part of the essay and explain.
9. Suggest where the author might use a quote or paraphrase to back up their point and explain why you think it would be helpful.
Be as thorough and thoughtful as you can, and tell them if they might be doing something wrong. You must offer deeper criticism!
