ADVICE FROM THE POPULAR MEDIA REGARDING PARENT-CHILD COMMUNICATION ABOUT SEXUALITY
U.S. parents tend to give their children little information about sex. Although both parents and adolescents express a desire for open communication about sexual issues, parents often feel they lack the necessary knowledge and communication skills. One source of information for parents is the popular media. Print and online magazines such as Parents and Working Mother sometimes offer information on adolescent sexuality and advice for discussing sex with adolescents and younger children. Another good source is the Well Family section of The New York Times (http:www.nytimes.com/section/well/family).
Locate one or two print or online articles that give parents information on adolescent sexuality or advice on discussing sex with their children. Next, critique each article, answering the following questions:
(1) What topics does the article cover?
(2) Are values discussed in addition to the biological aspects of sex?
(3) Are topics such as sexual orientation, contraception, and STIs discussed?
(4) Is the information presented in the article supported by research in the text?
(5) What specific advice, if any, is given for improving communication between parents and children?
(6) Is the article culturally sensitive? Explain, providing examples
