Assignment:

Discussion question: Both Toomeys and Nyers articles complicate some fundamental claims at the core of cosmopolitanism. In particular, they call into question the universal assumption / commitment to be a citizen of the world and to belong anywhere. They do this by adding an analysis of unequal power relations and differential access to the kinds of mobility, citizenship, and belonging that cosmopolitans believe ought to be universal.

Both readings this week talk about how local organizing and political activity can interact with and impact global structures of power and inequality. This intersects with some of what we read in the last two weeks, where authors debated the role of the local in either cultivating a cosmopolitan ethic or leading to patriotism and therefore being a barrier to this ethic. (Now for the actual question!), how do you think cosmopolitan theorists (like Nussbaum, and others you read in her book) would respond to the critiques or challenges to cosmopolitanism you read this week? Are these critiques insurmountable for cosmopolitan theory, or can it be salvaged or re-interpreted to account for differences in power and privilege? And what is the role of the local in a globally-focused cosmopolitan ethic?
