SOCIOLOGY OF AGING (Gerontology Analysis)
PART 1
Choose 20 examples pertaining to elders in society: And write them out clearly.
Whether this be from personal experiences, jokes or anecdotes you may have come across, characteristics in the books or various types of media (internet, radio interviews, newspaper articles) etc.
Using the knowledge through history of aging, aging in the world, demographics, and various myths and realities of aging to write a detailed paragraph analyzing on 10 out of 20.
GUIDELINES
1. FIRST: brief if you heard it on the radio, state the date, time, program and the station; then give a brief account of what was said and by whom.
2. If you read it in a novel, give the bibliography information/page #
3. If this is from an internet source, give references.
4. If you heard it on the bus, give detail information.
THEN: discuss the example of ageism ? E.g. a myth that is widely believed but erroneous ? Set out the myth, and the reality.
5. Are there any other concepts that could be utilized to analyse the example ? E.g. does a knowledge of cohorts and demographics allow you to draw conclusions about the example, and if so, what are they ?
PATRT 2
Using the knowledge of aging concerning the realities of aging, evaluate a location of your choice in terms of how senior friendly/unfriendly it is.
• This could be a shopping mall, sport venue, airport/bus depot, casino, hospital, city park, public library, an area of city etc.
• Feel free to ask advice from grandparents and other seniors as to what they notice or find important about particular areas/locations.
There are physical and social limitations that might affect seniors in the venue you are evaluating, which could affect how well they function in it.
Given this understanding, try to think how you will feel in a particular if you were 75 or 80 years old, rather than strong, streetwise, physically active young person.
Write short note on the following : (things to bear in mind )
1. Level of light (too bright ? too dim ? )
2. Could noise levels be tiring and confusing ?
3. Is there an obvious presence of security guards or sale assistant if help is needed ?
4. Are there sufficient seats available for resting ?
5. Special days/deals for seniors, e.g. . meal price, tax breaks ?
6. Is free use of electric scooters/shopping carts available ?
7. Is parking lot well supplied with handicapped parking, well lit, and free of ice and slush ?
8. Is there public transit/tax/free shuttle bus service to this location ?
9. Is the signage clear and legible for seniors ? or is there too much information ?
10. Any other factors you can think of that might be relevant.
