Question: In "Traits of Indian Character" and "Philip of Pokanoket," Washington Irving writes with sympathy for Native Americans -- but he also reinforces the European literary trope of the "Noble Savage," especially when discussing Indians in the past. This semester, several students have pointed out that in these sketches, Washington Irving makes use of the Noble Savage trope, but also at times subverts or goes beyond the stereotype.
