Question: Pat Urnal is a patient at Sisters Know Best Hospital. She was recently diagnosed with a gastrointestinal disorder. Pat knew she had a family history, so she wasn't surprised (or upset) about the diagnosis. She did some research and learned that she could pursue three possible treatments: 1) take a daily prescription medication; 2) go in for medicine given by infusion once every 3 months; 3) surgery. She talked to her physician, Dr. Liz N. Toomee, about her options. Toomee tells her that in her experience, medications for Pat's problem don't work. The only real option is surgery, which she thinks Pat needs to do. Pat is surprised by this, as she has read that medication helps in many cases. She asks about this, and Dr. Toomee scoffs and tells her that such research is flawed and funded by Big Pharma. Pat agrees to have the surgery. Are there problems with informed consent in this case? Why or why not? Be specific, citing the elements of informed consent.
