Assignment:
In your response post to at least two peers, address the following:
1. Are there any other reasons the communications were ineffective? Were there any other negative impacts or people negatively impacted that your peers did not mention? If so, explain.
2. What communication strategies or approaches could have been used to avoid the ineffective communications? What negative impacts would these have helped avoid, and why? Use course resources to support your response.
Earlier in my career, after I became a manager, I encountered a moment when communication was unclear and confusing. We typically held daily meetings where senior management reviewed key action items for the month. During one of these meetings, my senior manager outlined a plan to improve our team's overall production. As part of this initiative, we required additional time from all staff members over the next couple of weeks to meet our goals for the month.
However, the senior manager did not specify how much overtime would be required, leaving individual managers to communicate what they felt was sufficient time for this initiative. Unfortunately, after several managers had shared their expectations, many staff members began voicing their frustration. They discovered that some managers were asking for 2 hours of overtime while others requested only 1 hour or less. Ultimately, the lack of clear expectations led to confusion and dissatisfaction among the staff, which contributed to our failure to meet the overall target goal for the month. I believe that each manager approached this communication using a filtering method, hoping to avoid pushback from their teams.
