Step 1: Find a place in either your home or in nature (your backyard, Maybury State Park, a neighborhood park, etc...) in which you can completely isolate yourself from others and technology for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Take with you a writing utensil, paper, and a timepiece. Spend 30 minutes in the place you have chosen and record what you see, hear, feel, and think. Try to notice things that you don't usually notice. Look intently at objects around you and note the small details of them. Become aware of the sounds and smells around you. What do you hear? Are the sounds constant or interrupted? Try to describe these sounds.
Also, pay attention to the thought patterns that you have: what are you thinking about during this period of isolation? Do you focus on one idea, or does your mind tend to wander from idea to idea? Explain.
Step 3: Type a one-paged, typed reflection of your experience. Do not start this work until your entire thirty minutes is up. You should use your notes to help you compose this reflection. You should use M L A format at the top of your paper. You should also include the time (beginning and end) and the location of your experiment.
