Background:

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.

Some of the UNWTO priorities are:

• Advocating the value of tourism as a driver of socioeconomic growth and development.

• Supporting sustainable tourism policies and practices which make optimal use of environmental resources, respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities and provide socio-economic benefits for all.

• Advancing tourism's contribution to poverty reduction and development.

• Building partnerships with the non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), the education sector, the different levels of government and the

UN system to build a more sustainable, responsible and competitive tourism sector.

Assessment task 2 requires students to work in pairs (groups of 2) to:

Explore and provide critical analysis of the following (do not limit your research to these questions):

1. Sustainable Tourism: what does it mean? In the context of the UNWTO's priorities above, relate this to your own country's Tourism Industry.

2. Are sustainable and responsible tourism the same? Give relevant examples to identify and demonstrate the differences.

3. What are the sustainable tourism global trends and cite an example(s) from your home country.

4. What are the sustainable tourism global challenges and cite examples from your home country.
