Are Protists the Link Between Fungi and Animals?

By locating a single common ancestor through phylogeny analysis, scientists have hypothesized that a protist ancestor eventually diverged, creating varying taxa including overarching animal and fungi groups. Because protists are a paraphyletic group, it is extremely difficult to identify and group them simply based on morphology. However, the mechanism of energy acquirement is similar in both animals and fungi: they are both heterotrophic, meaning they must gain nutrients and energy from other organisms in order to survive. Are there any other morphological or systematic characteristics that would further support the link between fungi and animals, or are we left to trust the proposed phylogenetic hypothesis?
