Risk Analysis and Threat Assessment

Question 1

After completing reading assignments for week 1, write a post of at least 200 words addressing the question: Are disasters increasing in frequency and impacts, or does it just seem that way because we hear more about them than in the past because of the Internet, social media, and 24-hour news?

Consider whether this influences our perceptions of risk associated with different hazards.

In answering the question, provide your reasoning and include at least one reference to support your point(s). Do not cite Wikipedia, Answer, Google, or similar general search engines. (Cite an original source such as a research article, book, or credible study [not Jim-Bob's blog]).

What is risk?

After completing this week's readings and reviewing this week's presentations, in your own words, explain and give an example of each of the three basic components of risk:

• likelihood/threat

• vulnerability; and

• consequence.

Submit your explanation and examples (should be at least 200 words) .

Question 3

Vulnerability to hazards

Vulnerability can be a complex concept. It is not the same as consequences, but it leads to or contributes to consequences and impacts when a hazard occurs.

Prepare a paper of at least 250 words that explains the concept of vulnerability as it relates to risk; include explanation of physical and social vulnerability and provide examples of how they can lead to harm in a hazard occurrence.

Use at least two credible sources, and include reference citations in APA Style.

How bad can it be?

In your own words, explain at least two different ways of quantifying or looking at the potential consequences and impacts of a hazard.
