Assignment:

"Addiction" has long been thought to apply only to substance misuse. But the DSM-5 changed that definition in 2013 when it classified gambling disorder as the first behavioral addiction. But behaviors are harder to classify than substances because most of us have some behaviors that are "addictive" for us.

  1. Are all behaviors potentially addictive for some people?
  2. How do we decide which ones should be classified as "disorders"?
  3. Should everything someone does to excess be a diagnosable disorder? (Why or why not?)
  4. Would your answers differ based on whether the addiction is to a substance or a behavior?
  5. Where should social workers fit into the decision-making process?
