ARBE1103 Digital Communication In The Built Environment - The University of Newcastle
3D MODELLING PROJECT
In this project-based assessment, students will become familiar with operating Building Information Modelling (BIM) packages. Using Revit or ArchiCAD, students will implement a building proposal for a client. The assessment provides students with an express engagement in a BIM-enabled 3D Modelling package, requiring them to complete the following activities:
• Synthesise a client brief-select and rationalise a chosen design alternative
• Model design information in a digital environment
• Produce documentation and digital presentations for future tendering
• Journal the process
The purpose of this assessment is to provide students with the skills to respond to a project task through utilising industry essential BIM modelling packages to produce a basic digital model; providing context for understanding the importance of digital communication applications in the built environment.
PROJECT DETAILS
A small space is to be modelled in either-Revit OR ArchiCAD-responding to the provided brief of your clients The McMurray's.
Context: Your clients, Mr and Mrs McMurray, are a married couple who live with their daughter, Bonnie. Mr McMurray is on the local council and is an avid cyclist. Mrs McMurray manages the local pub and has amassed an impressive wine collection over the years. Their daughter, Bonnie, studies Permaculture at University and has been planting an experimental variety of succulents and edible plants.
The family own a standalone terrace on Wickham Island, an inner west suburb of Kingstown. Since the COVID-19 pandemic a few years ago, the McMurray's have been saving to extend their residence to generate another income stream.
The Brief: Your clients have a small area to play with, and even bigger ideas to fill it! The McMurray's have each put together an online scrapbook displaying their interests, aesthetics and dream designs.
They also have a 3D Model of the existing residence as a starting point for you!
The McMurray's have picked a level and easily accessible area adjoining the rear laneway of their property. This is perfect for one of their projects, however, they can't decide which to go ahead with.
The McMurray's would like to see a completed 3D model and Presentation Package for ONE of the following:
• The Bike Workshop--Mr. McMurray would like to service bikes to make some cash.
• The Wine Bar-Mrs. McMurray would like to start importing and selling wine.
• The Urban Pantry-Bonnie needs a space to grow and sell her produce.
Along with ONE of the above selections, the clients also would like intergrated in the proposal:
• A loft style bedroom with an ensuite, connected to the existing house
• An outdoor courtyard
The proposed structure must adhere to the following requirements and restrictions:
• Not exceed 60m2 gross floor area
• No taller than 8.5m in height
• Be at least 900mm away from the neighbour's boundary
• The ‘business' space must be on ground level and open into the laneway
