Assignment: Aquaculture Biosecurity
In the following assignment you will be addressing presented biosecurity scenarios and using what you have learned about disease spread and prevention to address each scenario.
Scenario 1: You own a shrimp farm that produces a freshwater prawn species like Macrobrachium rosenbergii. You maintain your own broodstock and do both in-pond and indoor spawning. You raise the spawned larvae to juvenile stage in the ponds, but hold them for sale in vats in a drive-through building. Although you do deliver large orders, it is common for customers to come to your farm to pick up. Due to disease issues, which have become big news in your industry, you decide to evaluate your biosecurity plan.
1. Identify your potential biosecurity concerns in this scenario.
2. What biosecurity practices should be adopted?
3. How Might you change the flow of people on the farm?
4. What training would you implement for farm staff?
5. Think about the crustacean physiology, what practices could the farm adopt that are preventative and proactive for crustacean (i.e. shrimp) health?
Scenario 2: You begin working for a shrimp company based out of south east Asia. The manager of the facility would like to import a new line of the broodstock to the facility. The facility is indoor recirculating controlled biofloc production of white shrimp. The facility plans to do on site processing of shrimp to be exported frozen to the world market. This requires a fully designed HACCP plan for food safety. Read the following publication on HACCP for aquaculture.
1. Identify the potential biosecurity concerns for this scenario.
2. What practices should be implemented to prevent the possible introduction of disease to the new broodstock?
3. What testing might you implement?
4. What HACCP (critical control points should be identified) for the plan?
