PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS: By completing the exercises in class, you will have completed most of the preliminary requirements: (a) general subject, (b) specific topic, (c) working thesis statement, (d) rough outline, (e) works-cited forms, (f) notes, and (g) rough draft.

SOURCE REQUIREMENTS: You are expected to develop your paper from a minimum number (six) and a variety of sources: 3-6 books or scholarly journal articles with at least one scholarly journal article (either in print or found through the library website/databases), and 0-3 other sources such as articles from a professional website, non-print sources (films, interviews), newspaper articles, pamphlets, etc.

SPECIAL USES OF SOURCES: To certify that you know how to incorporate materials in a variety of ways, include (a) paraphrased material, (b) a brief, in-text quotation, and (c) a block quotation. Obviously, you will use some of these techniques a great deal more than others. You may have two block quotes & still meet the minimum page length requirement; if you find you need to include more block quotes, you should account for them in the overall length of your paper. Review the paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting worksheets for a reminder about these techniques, and ask me if you have any questions. 

INTERNAL DOCUMENTATION: Use appropriate parenthetical citations to acknowledge your sources in the paper itself, according to MLA format; depend heavily on the OWL for explanations and samples, and ask me if you have any questions.

WORKS CITED: List only the works you have used in the paper, carefully following the formatting guidelines described in OWL.

GENERAL REMARKS: Be sure you are presenting your ideas clearly, so a clear, well-organized, convincing, and well-written paper should be your goal. Also attend carefully to technical matters: accuracy of facts and quotations, parenthetical documentation, works cited forms, grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation.

MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS: Your paper must be prepared according to MLA format.
